But I AM going to go see Boondock Saints II tonight! Wooo! I watched the trailer yesterday and it made it look awesome (as trailers do).

And I will not be thinking of crossing over BDS and the BtVS-verse. Honest. No matter if Julie Benz is the FBI agent this time. *whistles innocently*

The past couple of nights, I've had the chance to chat with joannindiw and/or mendax,neither of whom I've had the opportunity to chat with in far too long. Yay, chat! for chat leads to chat!fic, and chat!fic is a wonderful thing.

Last night, mendax told me she had come up with a prompt for me to write some Gatch for her... but, woe! she had forgotten the prompt in the course of her busy day. :-( Her replacement prompt was not something I had expected. She said, I’m in the mood to read something soothing. One of those happy slice-of-life things, or moments of discovery, or connection, but I don’t know how to phrase it.

Something soothing. With Gatch. My jaw dropped - what did she think I was, a miracle worker? Then my lazy muse got intrigued - was it even possible? So I tried. This is the result, which mendax said I had to post. ^^ Beware o' slash.

So today, after a dishearteningly long time trying to find a configuration of chat programs that would let us all actually chat together, quillaninc, joannindiw and mendax and I had group chat for the first time since February, I think. mendax mentioned that she'd finished beta-ing something for someone after what she called a distressingly long time. I said that called for a reward! (Because a) it does, and b)she always deserves rewards, as well as c)I wanted to write something/anything.) She wanted to know if it was the kind of a reward where she could ask what Ken and Joe had been doing since she last saw them, and I agreed wholeheartedly.

Then came the trauma of chat programs misbehaving and generally being unpleasant. When we finally got all together again, mendax said that after all this, her prompt had to be coitus interruptus. Again with the whole-hearted agreement.

Of course, my mind tracked back to the last time I'd written Ken and Joe (that wasn't the angst-ridden Way series, anyway), and recalled I'd written a little something for mendax in that afore-mentioned group chat in February. Since this is actually the lead-in for today's reward ficlet, I'm posting them up as a set.

So I've reached the end of heeroluva's year o' fic. 12 ficlets or set of drabbles for a good cause, courtesy of livelongnmarry. It was great fun stretching my wings *koff* and playing with both ideas not my own (as in the hyena!Xander ficlets) and pairings I had not before considered (Jayne/River).

Anyway, I wanted to end up with LotR, as I began with it 12 months ago. And then I got a rare idea for humor from my normally-angsty muse. I had to run with it. Forgive me? Also, go, me! for getting them done early this time.

Music entirely coincidental, I swear!

This fic has a backstory nearly as long as it is at this point (and it's still unfinished). It has been known by several different epithets throughout its long history, including The Fic That Shall Not Be Named. (ruh-roh...)

quillaninc and I were chatting with mendax one fine Sunday, and Quill happened to mention this fic - and the art that she'd prepared for it, against the day when it finally got posted. The way Quill and I bantered about it, calling it TFTSNBN, intrigued mendax, and she requested it for her next bit in the Year o' Fic she bought last year.

Urk! thinks I. I suppose I'd better see if I can round up those old, grey-beareded plot bunnies...

Because this fic has been variously actively worked on and (mostly) stalled to a dead stop since about 2002, when mendax first entered the following idea in the Plot Bunny Adoption Center on the Vying group on Yahoo!: (Blame Cowboy Bebop/Trigun/Firefly) Voltron the Western. Plunk the boys into those classic archetypes -- the sheriff/cowboy/gunslinger/gambler/bartender/prostitute/rancher/whathaveyou .

So I did. It started off as something mostly camp and fun... and, because it's me, it quickly morphed into the usual angst-ridden mess I usually write. Ah, well. Maybe, when it's finished, Quill's art (long since finished, to my eternal shame) will bring back that spark of humor.

Anyway - my dear forest, here you go, the first part of your long awaited Western fic. *hugs* This first part doesn't include many of your listed archetypes, but they'll mostly all be filled in the later bits (some of which have been written but must be re-written).

So, fellow Bay Staters (which just sounds better than Massachusettians, as the bf would call us)... what was up with that great big ball of light in the sky this afternoon?!? I was blinded, blinded, I say! by the brightness. The clouds were white! The sky was blue! I can't recall ever having seen such a configuration before! It must be the end of the world!

...

Perhaps I over-react. ^^

WTF-ery aside, damn, it was nice to see the sun. The bf will no doubt bitch and complain and pretend to be going up in flames, but I, for one, am not a vampire, and a full week of rain? Is far, far too much. It was so damp for so long that I was beginning to think I'd be sprouting mushrooms between my toes.

*luxuriates briefly to allow rain-damp skin to dry out*

Now, normally, mendax's prompts for her year of fic are... well, easy. As in, easy to get started, easy to work through, easy to polish and finish.

This one definitely wasn't any of those things. I couldn't get started; once I got started, I couldn't hold on. I was desperate enough to break out my (undubbed, unsubbed) tapes of Gatchaman II, just to try to get into the mood. This just got finished; it hasn't got any polish.

That this is late is entirely my fault, not at all the fault of the prompt, because damn, I'd been expecting this prompt since October or November of last year. So, mendax, I'm very sorry that this is so late, and am willing to take on any penalty you think is fit.
